How to Order Prescriptions

Description

Mupirocin topical cream is used to treat secondarily infected traumatic skin lesions due to specific bacteria. Mupirocin topical ointment is used to treat impetigo. This medicine works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.

Mupirocin Ointment is a dermatological antibiotic that has been used to treat infections in dogs that are caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.

Each gram contains 20 mg mupirocin USP in a polyethylen glycol ointment, NF base.

Dosage

For dermatologic use only. Apply a small amount of ointment on the affected area three times daily. Patients not showing a clinical response within 3 to 5 days should be re-evaluated.

Mupirocin helps treat infections such as superficial pyoderma, fold pyoderma, interdigital cysts/draining tracts, acne, pressure point pyodermas as well as beta-lactamase producing and methicillin-resistant strains. It may also be of use in other species and conditions such as feline acne, equine pyoderma, superficial pyoderma, interdigital abscesses, and pressure point pyodermas. It also shows activity against other gram-positive pathogens, including strains of Corynebacterium, Clostridium, Proteus and Actinomyces.

Mupirocin acts by preventing bacterial protein synthesis. While bacterial resistance is rare, it is thought that resistance occurs more frequently when mupirocin is used over a prolonged period and over larger areas of skin. Therefore, it is recommended to use mupirocin for a short time on small localized areas. Pseudomonas infections are particularly resistant to mupirocin. Mupirocin is not suitable for the treatment of burns.

Mupirocin is not significantly absorbed through the skin into the blood stream, but does penetrate into deep skin infections.
