Description

VETMEDIN® Solution (pimobendan oral solution) is a medication designed to manage the signs of mild, moderate, or severe congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs resulting from myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) or dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

Vetmedin is indicated for use with concurrent therapy for congestive heart failure (e.g., furosemide, etc.) as appropriate on a case-by-case basis.

• a. A dog with modified New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class II heart failure has fatigue, shortness of breath, coughing, etc. apparent when ordinary exercise is exceeded.

• b. A dog with modified NYHA Class III heart failure is comfortable at rest, but exercise capacity is minimal.

• c. A dog with modified NYHA Class IV heart failure has no capacity for exercise and disabling clinical signs are present even at rest.

Mechanism of Action

Pimobendan enhances cardiac muscle contractility and dilates blood vessels, thereby improving heart efficiency and reducing the workload on the heart.

Active Ingredient

Pimobendan, a benzimidazole-pyridazinone derivative, functions as a non-sympathomimetic, non-glycoside inotropic agent with vasodilative properties.

Dosage and Administration

The recommended total daily dose is 0.23 mg per pound (0.5 mg/kg) of the dog's body weight, divided into two equal doses administered approximately 12 hours apart (morning and evening). VETMEDIN Solution should be given directly into the mouth and should not be mixed with food.

Formulation

This product is a clear to yellow to slightly green or slightly brown aqueous solution containing 1.5 mg/mL of pimobendan.

Important Safety Information

• VETMEDIN Solution is intended for use only in dogs with clinical evidence of heart failure. It should not be administered in cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, or any condition where increasing cardiac output is inappropriate.

• Common side effects observed in field studies include poor appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, azotemia, weakness, and ataxia.

• Keep this medication out of reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice immediately.
